IBEDC TEMPORARILY WITHDRAWS SERVICES FROM ESA-OKE OVER ATTACK

The Management of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, (IBEDC) has decried the recent attack meted out on her staff in Esa-Oke, Osun state by the youths of the community due to a recent power outage by Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) Oshogbo. The outage was as a result of the routine maintenance of their 132KVA line from Saturday, August 20th to Sunday August 21st, 2016 and supply was restored at about 9am on Tuesday, 23rd August, 2016. The exercise is necessary for quality and safe wheeling of energy as indicated by TCN.
IBEDC expresses its displeasure over these brutalities which have left three of our staff injured with bruises from the machete blows dealt on them. It would be recalled that earlier this year, the Osun State Governor, His Excellency, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola intervened before power could be restored to Ijesaland after a similar outbreak of violence. We, as a customer-focused and friendly company, are always ready to distribute power to our customers as allocated to us from the national grid. However it is quite unfortunate that what we get sometimes in return are assaults, threats to lives, insecurity and a hostile environment to discharge our lawful duties. 
We reiterate that the outage that happened from Saturday 20th to Sunday 21st of August, 2016 was due to the maintenance procedure by the TCN in Oshogbo which is not under the control of IBEDC as a distribution company. The company has various channels of communication with which the customers can lodge their complaints for speedy attention. Sadly, none of these channels were explored before these youths unleashed terror on our staff: the Service Manager, Customer Relations Officer and the Technical Service officer. 
Narrating their ordeal, the trio said the youths in the community had mobbed the IBEDC office in Esa-Oke, where they broke into the office and attacked them. The mob went ahead to vandalise the offices and carted some personal effects belonging to the staff along with some service wires. Subsequently, the staff were thoroughly beaten and dealt machete blows. They are currently hospitalised.
The management is gutted by this development as we are being forced to withdraw our services temporarily from Esa-Oke and its environs to prevent further damage to lives and property. We plead with all our esteemed customers in Osun state and across our franchise area for their understanding and cooperation. All community leaders, stakeholders and government representatives are hereby implored to educate our youths to desist from attacking our staff and destroying critical infrastructure as this will further exacerbate the already existing challenges in the power sector. 
We strongly demand a stop to these assaults on our employees in the course of discharging their legitimate duties to enable us fulfil our mission to distribute power and change lives.
